Environment and Forests Minister Lazlo Borbely has announced plans to visit Rosia Montana by early next month, as he wants to get first-hand updates on the current developments in this old mining community, where Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) hopes to launch its major gold mining project.
In a recent televised appearance on TVR 1, Lazlo Borbely said he would be accompanied in his trip by Culture Minister Kelemen Hunor.
Referring to RMGC’s project, the Environment Minister said the government would resume the evaluation procedure if the company can submit a valid planning permission from the local planning authority. However, he emphasized that the technical analysis of the mining project would closely follow the European legislation in the field. “The government has granted this investor a gold mining licence, but it has failed to act in a fair manner and press ahead with the proceedings, sidetracking the issue instead. If the government decides to grant a licence to an investor, then it actually endorses a gold mining strategy. The gold extraction procedure is a completely different matter. The cyanide-based extraction is not banned in the European Union, therefore the government has also assumed this responsibility to allow cyanide-based mining if the company provides the necessary guarantees,” said Borbely.
He added that he plans to visit a cyanide-based gold mining operation in Sweden. “I have statistics on gold deposits in all countries. Moreover, I discussed with the Swedish Minister of Environment because I was curious - 4.5 tonnes of gold are extracted in annually. I have received an invitation from my Swedish counterpart to visit a mine that uses the cyanide-based extraction procedure. So I am going to go there and inspect the facility, because, in my opinion, many people express their opinions on the issue without knowing all the technical details of that technology."
